History
Lake Garda is an ancient battleground, beginning with the Romans who, under Emperor Claudius, fought Germanic tribes to possess it. In the eighteenth century, Napoleon Bonaparte won Lake Garda from the Austrians at the Battle of Rivoli. Then, in 1959, the Battle of Solferino during Italy’s second war of independence saw victory for Napoleon III. Still, with huge losses on both sides, the Kingdom of Italy was finally proclaimed two years later. There was peace until 1943, when Mussolini established his Italian Social Republic in Salò, which became the effective capital of Italy until the end of the Second World War.
